Non-Newtonian Fluid - GOO!

Today I taught a lesson about the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses.  I also told them about something in between called non-Newtonian fluids.  Basically a solid with liquid properties.  Cornstarch and water.

Learn about it with Steve Spangler Science on Ellen here.

Also see a connection with The Big Bang Theory

Sorry if it is messy but it is so fun to try at home.  Perfect goo for Halloween!

Cyber Bullying

In light of the sad events of the past week centering around bullying in schools and internet safety I have been thinking a lot about what I can do as a teacher to make a difference.  Words are weapons and we so often throw them around thoughtlessly.   Despite the benefits to all of our technology there are also many dangers online and I feel our students should be armed to make good choices.  So how can we help?  I am going to be talking to my health classes about internet safety and cyber bullying.  I'm hoping to start some discussions and find out what the kids know and where we can fill in the gaps.  I will be using some resources I found here:

Maybe it is something you want to talk to your kids about too.  Here is a great resource I found for parents.

Just so you know as far as I can tell all of my students have been very responsible online at school and we do our best to keep them that way with various filters and security measures in place.  I also want to add a disclaimer that I think our students are a WONDERFUL group of kids and do their best to treat each other with respect and kindness.  Anything outside of this that I am aware of I promise to deal with promptly.  Please let me know anytime there is an issue and I will do my best to help.  Outside of that I think an ounce of prevention and a dash of support never hurts.

More zoo fun!

Going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

A few pics from our day so far.

Here is a picture of my son, Aidan, and I in the bush taking a break from our quad ride. We are at the lake for our family Thanksgiving weekend.

So here is the trivia.  What kind of tree are we in front of?  The yellow needled tree.

My Hero!

Check out a blog I have made for my brother, Larry Green, who is a gold-medal athlete for the Special Olympics Canada Alpine Ski Team!  He is going to Korea in January for the WORLD S.O. GAMES!!  I'm hoping to have him come and talk to my health 7 & 4 classes about following your dreams and working hard to reach your goals before he goes to Korea.  Please visit the blog and you can even post comments to cheer him on!
